1740 1

Stone’s Original Green Ginger Wine was conceived at London’s Finsbury Distillery in 1740. The London drinks business was booming at the time, with gin experiencing a meteoric rise as a result of the Gin Craze (1730’s-50’s).

Alongside a flourishing Gin production, huge ginger mill stones ground fresh ginger in order to make the Finsbury Distillery’s ginger wine. These same mill stones can be found on display on the corner of Northburgh Street in The City of London, EC1.

Our Stone’s founder, Joseph Stone
- son of John Stone: a grocer at 230 High Holborn from 1800 - became an apprentice at the Finsbury Distillery at the age of 17, before starting his own ‘grocer and tea merchant’ business located on Peckham High St.

In 1851, Joseph Stone - now a ‘foreign wine merchant’ - relocated to 27 Finsbury Place. Being in such close proximity to the Finsbury Distillery, he recognised the ginger genius at work and wanted a piece of the action; he began selling the distillery’s ginger wine (and other drinks) under his own Stone name.

In 1864, Joseph’s brother-in-law, Warren Stormes Hale, became Lord Mayor of London. It was in his honour that Joseph added the 19th century City of London crest to the Stone’s logo, which is still in use today.
